It’s Citrus Season! the season where you step it to your local health food store and see mountains of lemons, limes, and oranges in more varieties than you can count, more notably though, It’s Blood Orange Season!!!! YES!
Blood oranges being one of my favorite oranges i just couldn’t help making a post about them and even though it’s still a bit nippy outside and it might be a little early for frozen treats, blood oranges are really yummy frozen, so Popsicle’s it is!
Blood oranges are in season from December through May and I love making my recipes based on what’s in season. What Chef doesn’t!
Blood oranges like there name says have a dark red flesh and juice. The red pigment is an antioxidant called anthocyanin, Which according to an article published in, 2004 in the “journal of biomedicine and biotechnology”. Anthocyanins might help prevent cancer and heart disease.
Also due to this red antioxidant filled pigment blood oranges have more antioxidants than other oranges. awesome!
and there packed with other nutrients like fiber and vitamin C, they have a small dose of protein as well as potassium and folate. sounds like a healthy treat to me!
Also unlike other oranges Blood oranges have a unique flavor profile being almost raspberry like in addition to the usual citrus notes.Which goes perfect with the honey I put in this recipe, I use local clover/alfalfa honey from parachute CO. in my recipes. The clover honey has a nice mellow, sweet taste to it that i enjoy without overpowering the citrus. I only put 1/4 cup honey in this recipe which can be omitted all together for a tart citrus pop or replaced with caramely flavored coconut sugar for an even lower Glycemic index recipe and as well as Popsicle’s this recipe can be used to make sorbet or granita too. YUM!
A fruit that tastes like tart citrus oranges and sweet red juicy raspberries!… YES PLEASE!
